Makeup Artist Tools List for Beginners
1. Makeup Backpack: The Least Talked About Makeup Artist Tool
To keep everything organized. A good makeup case with compartments will make it easier to find what you need quickly and keep your tools protected.
I found this amazing backpack that you can easily carry with you wherever your gig takes you! This backpack is perfect for beginner makeup artists since you won’t need a larger bag or trollies yet.
2. Brushes: The Backbone of Makeup Artistry
Let’s talk brushes. Good brushes are an absolute game-changer. They can make a world of difference in how your makeup looks and how easy it is to apply. Here is the list of makeup brushes and uses that you should have in your kit:
- Foundation Brush: Whether you prefer a flat brush or a stippling brush, this one is key for creating a smooth, even base. A flat foundation brush is great for precise application, while a stippling brush can give you a more airbrushed finish.
- Concealer Brush: Perfect for covering up blemishes and getting into those tiny areas around the eyes and nose. Look for one with firm bristles and a small, rounded shape.
- Powder Brush: A big, fluffy brush is essential for setting your makeup with powder. It helps to distribute the product evenly and gives a natural finish.
- Blush Brush: An angled blush brush works best for applying blush to the apples of your cheeks. It fits the contours of your face perfectly.
- Contour Brush: A small, angled brush is great for defining cheekbones and adding dimension to your face. It can also be used for applying bronzer.
- Highlight Brush: A fan brush or a small, tapered brush is ideal for applying highlighter to the high points of your face like the tops of your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, and your cupid’s bow.
- Eyeshadow Brushes: You’ll need a few different types – a flat brush for packing on shadow, a fluffy brush for blending, and a small brush for detail work. A blending brush is particularly important for creating seamless transitions between colors.
- Eyebrow Brush: Usually dual-ended with a spoolie on one side and an angled brush on the other. The spoolie helps to groom your brows, while the angled brush is perfect for filling them in with powder or pomade.
- Lip Brush: For those precise lip lines and perfect application. It’s especially useful when working with bold colors or creating ombre lip effects.
3. Sponges: For That Flawless Finish
Next, you’ll need some makeup sponges. The beauty blender is a cult favorite, and for good reason. It’s perfect for blending foundation, concealer, and even cream blushes or highlighters. Just remember to dampen it before use for the best finish. Here’s a quick rundown of why sponges are a must-have:
- Seamless Blend: Sponges can give you a flawless, airbrushed finish that’s hard to achieve with brushes alone.
- Versatility: They can be used for applying and blending liquid, cream, and even powder products.
- Precision: The pointed end is great for getting into hard-to-reach areas like around the nose and under the eyes.
4. Eyelash Essentials: The Finishing Touch
No makeup look is complete without stunning lashes. Eyelashes can really elevate your makeup look and add a touch of drama.
- Eyelash Curler. Helps to lift and curl the lashes for a wide-eyed look. A good lash curler can make a huge difference, especially for clients with straight or downward-facing lashes.
- False Lashes. Have a variety of styles from natural to dramatic, along with lash glue. Individual lashes and lash clusters are great for more natural, customizable looks, while strip lashes are perfect for a quick, full lash effect.
- False Lashes Applicators. Eyelash applicators are essential tools for effortless and precise false lash application. These handy devices feature a comfortable grip and curved design, allowing you to easily place and secure lashes along your lash line with precision.
- Eyelash Glue. As a professional makeup artist, eyelash glue is a must in your kit. You couldn’t really apply the falsies without this!
5. Accessories: The Little Things Matter
Don’t forget these small but mighty tools. They might not be the stars of the show, but they’re essential for creating polished looks and maintaining hygiene.
- Tweezers: Honestly, depending on your skills and the location you’re at, you probably need a specific certification or license for plucking brows. But tweezers can still be handy when you need an extra on standby when you apply false lashes.
- Scissors: For trimming lashes and brow hairs. Small, sharp scissors are perfect for these detailed tasks.
- Sharpener: Keep your pencils sharp! A dual sharpener with both small and large openings is ideal for all your pencils.
- Mixing Palette and Spatula: For mixing foundations, concealers, and other products. A stainless steel mixing palette and spatula are perfect for keeping your products sanitary and ensuring you get the right shade every time.
- Brush Cleaner: For keeping your brushes in top condition. A good brush cleaner will help to remove all the makeup residue and keep your brushes soft and ready to use.
- Cotton Pads and Q-tips: For cleaning up any mistakes and perfecting details. They’re great for smudging eyeliner, cleaning up mascara smudges, and correcting any errors.
6. Sanitization: Keeping It Clean
Last but definitely not least, hygiene is paramount. As a professional makeup artist, it’s crucial to maintain a clean and sanitary environment to protect your clients and yourself. This is what separates a professional vs not. Make sure you have:
- Hand Sanitizer: Use it before and during your makeup application. This helps to ensure that your hands are clean, especially if you’re touching your client’s face.
- Alcohol Spray: To sanitize tools and products. You can use it to clean your mixing palette, spatula, tweezers, and scissors.
- Disposable Applicators: For anything that can’t be sanitized, like lip gloss and mascara. These help to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of bacteria.
- Brush Cleaner: For quickly cleaning brushes between clients. A fast-drying brush cleaner is ideal for when you need to reuse a brush quickly.
- Clean Towels: To wipe your hands, clean brushes, and keep your workspace tidy. Having a few clean, soft towels on hand is always a good idea.
- Silicon Mat. A sanitary silicone mat is essential for a Pro MUA. It ensures hygiene, prevents spillage, and offers a stable workspace for makeup application.
- Travel Garbage Bags. Travel garbage bags are compact, disposable, and essential for keeping your space tidy on the go.
Building your makeup kit is an investment, but it doesn’t have to break the bank. Start with the basics, and as you grow and learn, you can add more specialized tools and products. Remember, the most important thing is your skill and creativity, not just the tools you use. With this list, you’re well on your way to building a professional kit that will serve you well as you develop your artistry.
