Beauty is such a subjective word and concept. It’s not a one-size-fits-all kind of thing. That’s why knowing yourself and developing a daily skin care routine at home that suits your skin, budget, schedule, and specific needs is essential to achieving that glowy aura within you that others can’t help but notice!
Taking the time to curate a personal beauty habit nowadays is more widely accepted than ever before. Having a “me-time” isn’t considered a luxury anymore. It’s now often viewed as an absolute must if you want to be more productive with your day.
Now, I understand that you may feel overwhelmed by the fast-paced beauty innovations that are weekly marketed to you on the internet. However, in this guide, you’ll learn how to develop a personalized beauty routine that suits your needs. You will also learn how to become an expert in caring for your skin, and how to modify these ideas to fit your needs without feeling pressured or overwhelmed.
As a beauty enthusiast myself, I am sharing with you the top 11 repeatable ways you can replicate to develop your own beauty routine. These tips come from my years of obsession with skincare and makeup, backed by the lessons I learned from my ongoing course with FIT Beauty Industry Essentials.
This post is all about repeatable ways to develop a beauty routine you can realistically stick with. Let’s dive in!
Repeatable Ways to Develop a Beauty Routine
1. It’s All In Your Mind
As I mentioned earlier, beauty is such a subjective word and concept. What may seem disorganized or chaotic to others, could be a stunning masterpiece to you. Trust your own perspective and don’t be afraid to appreciate the beauty that is unique to you.
Never compare yourself with others, especially in terms of physical attributes. So stop obsessing over what others might think of how you look! Check out this striking quote that can help shift your mindset.
This just means you do you, girl! Instead of comparing your physical appearance with others, take the time to know yourself more deeply by observing little facts you enjoy doing or hate having. Such as the goals you want to set. The boundaries you’re trying to break. Or the things you want to change that you have control over.
Think about it. Even doctors need to determine the cause of an illness before they can provide a diagnosis. In mathematics, the steps in problem-solving are determining the problem and required before deciding which solution fits best.
It’s the same in our mindset. We’ll need to acknowledge what we have, where we are, and what we need to do to get to where we want to be. Only through knowing yourself deeply enough can you move forward and develop the succeeding habits more efficiently.
I want you to have clarity and peace of mind. I want you to be able to navigate through your brain and not stress over the things you can’t control. This kind of stress makes your hair fall, your skin dull, and your wrinkles more pronounced, and that’s just the superficial level of effects we get from stressing over things we can’t control.
Cultivating a sense of inner peace and confidence from within can radiate outward, contributing to a more vibrant and healthy appearance, and is paramount in this beauty routine.
2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
Do you know that we are made of 55 – 60% water? I can’t stress this enough but water is an integral part of being beautiful and you should probably consider taking more of it.
We easily lose water content in our body especially when you’re anything like me whose veins run on caffeine. We’re obviously losing water when we sweat or go pee. But what’s shocking is that we’re also losing water by breathing! I don’t know about you but I’d like to have as many seamless inhales and exhales as possible.
Breathing aside, drinking enough water has many other amazing benefits for your skin like improving elasticity and preventing premature aging. Consider taking 6 to 8 glasses of water in your daily skin care routine for glowing skin. So don’t skimp on the waterβhydration is key for a plump, dewy complexion.
3. Wear The Damn Sunscreen!
I just can’t emphasize this enough but could you just please wear the damn sunscreen?! Sunscreens are a must in your beauty routine. It will help you prevent premature aging, dark spots, sagging, and even skin cancer!
When buying a sunscreen product, look for as many ++++ next to PA as you can. The more +, the better! What these screens are UVA. UVA has a longer wavelength and penetrates deep into our dermis, causing skin aging and cancer. It penetrates even through your windows!
UVB on the other hand has a shorter wavelength than UVA, penetrating the epidermis layer of our skin, and causing sunburns β which I do not worry about so much since I donβt work or stay long under the sun without any shade. This is screened by the SPF that we see in sunscreens.
Also remember that sunscreens could also be your bucket hat, that cute umbrella, that oversized long-sleeved shirt, and a midi skirt.
4. Best Day And Night Skincare Routine
This section might be the only content you wanna hear regarding beauty routines. I get it! I was on the same page before. After years of consuming beauty content and applying it to my daily beauty routine, here’s what I know are the basics of the best day and night skincare routine at home that will help you look youthful without breaking the bank (please note that I WILL NEVER recommend what I haven’t used before or what didn’t work for me):
Day Skincare Routine:
- Wash your face with water
- Apply a fast-absorbing and moisturizing cream to your face and neck. Here are my recommendations:
- Slather your face and neck with what? You got it right! Sunscreen! Here are the top sunscreens I recommend for any skin types
Night Skincare Routine:
- Clear off any makeup. When you wear full-on makeup throughout the day, try softening it with Beauty of Joseon Ginseng Cleansing Oil.
- If you’re only wearing everyday makeup, Eveline Cosmetics Hyaluronic Micellar Water should be enough as a makeup remover.
- Wash your face with COSRX Low pH Good Morning Cleanser. I know it says Good Morning but I use it at night anyways!
- Optional: Put on Beauty of Joseon Revive Eye Serum: Retinal + Ginseng around your eye areas or wherever you need to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. You can use this as sparingly as I did, only 3-5 nights a week. Never put this on when you don’t have any intention of applying sunscreen the next morning.
- Here are some of the best creams to ever touch your face and neck:
5. Sleeping Beauty
There’s this short video of a 90+-year-old lady saying she sleeps 10 hours daily. Goals! But of course, not everyone needs 10 hours of sleep daily. Neither the luxury!
6 to 8 hours of restorative sleep is enough to achieve optimum brain health, skin repair, and rejuvenation. Not only will you reduce your undereye bags, but you will also wake up in a good mood and improve concentration and focus.
You might wanna try these helpful tips I aim to keep up with to sleep as soundly as Sleeping Beauty:
- Ditch your screens at least 30 minutes before your bedtime.
- Opt for smaller meal portions before bed.
- Have your last sip of caffeine at least 4 hours before you sleep.
- Dim your bedroom lights.
- Try to stick to a sleeping schedule.
6. Sweat Sessions
Now, I don’t mean you need to have an hourglass figure! I just mean that you’ll have to get sweaty every day. But if you can go to the gym, or if you have a personal trainer, good for you!
If you’re anything like me who can’t do a push-up or can barely plank, you might wanna try to climb up and down the stairs a few times. I like to listen to music on the stairs and trick my brain into thinking that I’ll just have to finish this one song. And then another song, and another song. Before I know it, I’m sweating and almost out of breath!
If you don’t have stairs near you, try one of these cheerful dance classes on YouTube.
If you have limited space, check out this 10-minute plank workout. I have a limited space and when I’m not in the mood to climb up and down the stairs, I do this instead. This is one of my favorite workouts because it’s so convenient and beginner-friendly!
When we exercise and sweat, our blood flow increases, our body produces more collagen, and our skin becomes more elastic and firm. These are a few of the many benefits we can achieve physically when we commit to sweat sessions.
And I know most experts recommend 30 minutes to an hour of exercise daily. But not all of us have that luxury. So, the least we can do is to give our bodies a favor and opt for doable 10-minute exercises or a walk in the nearest park.
7. Watch Your Mouth
We are what we eat. So of course when we eat junk foods, we’ll look like junk! I won’t sugarcoat this. What we eat or drink is more important than what we put topically. When tempted by your sweet tooth, it’s better to grab fruits instead of donuts and caramel latte.
And beauteas, what we choose to intake goes throughout our veins! I’m not only talking about food. Minimize, limit, or better yet, cut off your nicotine! It’s making you older than you actually look. How? Well, aside from it’s burning you from the inside, just picture the wrinkles around your mouth every single time you light that cigarette on!
So watch your mouth and be mindful of your eating and smoking habits, portions, and frequency.
8. Get Out
Soaking up some sun isn’t just about getting a tanβit can actually work wonders for your beauty routine!
Getting out and greeting Mr. Sun early in the morning, about 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. can help your body produce vitamin D, and absorb vitamins E and K. These vitamins are essential in maintaining that healthy glow from within.
And while a sun-kissed glow is great, sunburn definitely isn’t on the beauty agenda! So please check out the next section. I’m getting really riled up with that one. Haha!
9. Shy Away From Negativities
This section resonates with the first one, It’s All In Your Mind.
Elevate your beauty routine with a radiant mindset and shy away from negativities! Negativities can cast a shadow even on the most radiant complexion. Instead, always start and end your day by channeling your inner peace and infusing each one with affirmations of self-love and gratitude.
Here are some tips for positivity in developing your beauty routine:
- As you cleanse, see it as a fresh start.
- With each moisturizer application, massage your worries away.
- Embrace your unique features with joy, knowing they tell your story.
- Apply makeup as if you’re a canvas for creativity.
Lastly, surround yourself with people whose got only the best wishes for you. Remember: you are the average of the people you surround yourself with.
10. Patience
Starting a beauty routine requires more than just products. Remember that a beauty routine calls for a commitment to patience.
A beauty routine is called a “routine” for a reason. Why, though? It’s because it ought to be repeated! Understanding that true beauty is cultivated over time and does not happen overnight is essential to achieving that glowy aura you want yourself and others to see in you.
Don’t quit your established routine so easily. Give it at least a couple of months before you decide that this routine is not for you. In skincare, some products like retinol (wrinkle-reducing) will give you subtle visible skin improvements in 3 to 6 months; niacinamide (brightening) can take up to 8 to 12 weeks; and hyaluronic acid (elasticity and hydration) up to 8 weeks or longer, to name a few.
Aaand! If you want to fix what’s upstairs, a.k.a. mindset, it’s gonna take longer than a year! So, be patient and allow yourself the grace to progress steadily towards your beauty routine goals.
11. Consistency Is Key
Consistency, hand in hand with patience, is the key to making anything work in this routine. Going through the same beauty routine steps every blessed day, morning and night β is key to achieving and maintaining real and visible results!
Stick with your plan and don’t forget to forgive yourself whenever you fall off the track. And I know from experience that the hardest day to follow through with your routine is the day after you skipped it. So be kind to yourself and carry on with your regimen.
See? Most parts of this routine are free and readily accessible to you!
But please know that no matter how strictly we implement or develop this beauty routine, or any other anti-aging or wellness routine, we cannot stop the natural aging process of our body. We try to keep up with these routines to prevent premature aging, not fully stop it. With this, I hope you appreciate and celebrate your beautiful self every single moment!
